Chickens and Cows Make a Farm a Home

Right now, I’ve got ten birds. We used to have many more, but they were stolen. So, these ones I just bought from a neighbor. You don’t feel complete without an animal on the farm.

I had a cow, but it had red water: It was urinating blood. They were treating it, and it was not improving, so I had to sell that one off.

Then, the other cow, the big mother cow, was pregnant. But unfortunately, when I woke up one day, I found the animal had fallen on one of its limbs. When I tried to pull her up, she couldn’t stand. Then, I realized that a bad person had come and hid out behind the barn and hit the cow. The bone was crushed, and there was swelling. So, we had to sell the injured cow to other people [for meat].

Now, I’m intending to get a new cow with a microloan from Mbale. I thought about using my savings instead, but I was a bit cautious. The cow would cost 2.5 million shillings [$747], and that’s all of my savings and more. I said to myself, “What if these people try to steal my money?” If I borrow $50,000 [$14.84], then I have to give back $70,000 [$21], but I will still have money left in the bank and some for my other goal: to rebuild my shelter [barn].
